“We need to learn read and write as if our lives depended on it.”

“We need to learn read and write as if our lives depended on it.” Dr. Henry Louis Gates Professor at Harvard University

I heard that quote on a great radio show this weekend. They update the webpage each week, so if you can, please tune into the section of the show that Dr. Gates was on this week.

I LOVED this quote and the context of the quote. Dr. Gates was talking about how Black Americans need to “vote and learn to read and write as if our lives depended on it, as it did when we were in slavery.”

A lot of people don’t think that literacy is a life and death issue, but from what I have seen, it is. We cannot succeed without a few basic things, confidence in yourself and the simple human right to literacy. I know that our AL classes provide both of those things. How do I know this? Because our students tell me everyday, their lives are forever changed by being able to take apart words, and put them back together.
