Congratulations to Diamond!

January 22, 2008

Diamond Riley won the Thomas A. Davis Youth Leadership Award at Union Baptist Church’s Martin Luther King Celebration last night. She was also accepted at UNC-Greensboro, which is her first choice for college!

Diamond is a senior at Durham School of the Arts and an intern here at the DLC. Last June, she volunteered as a note-taker at our student forum. She did a fabulous job and was so inspired by the students that she later decided to become an intern with the program, where she now spends two evenings (3-8 hours) per week. She has impressed students, volunteers, and staff with her willingness to undertake any task – from creating homework worksheets to tutoring students who are awaiting permanent tutors. Diamond begins the official tutor training tonight and looks forward to working one-on-one with a student. As an active member of the Center’s Volunteer Support Team, she also helps to plan and implement special events and workshops. She has made two contributions to this blog, dated 7/4/07 and 10/26/07.

We are lucky to have this bright, conscientious, and highly motivated young woman with us! And we are so proud of her!
